Hubble DC was born on October 11, 2023. His original name was Romeo (I had a cat named Romeo growing up, so of course it was meant to be). We drove from Harrison township, Michigan (suburb of Detroit). It’s about a seven hour drive to New Philadelphia Ohio where we picked him up on December 10, 2023. We left midday on a Saturday and picked him up Sunday morning after staying at a hotel. The place we stayed ended up having a golden retriever guide dog convention that day, so we were greeted with about 20 service dogs that morning. We knew we were in the right place.
My partner and I have been together for 5.5 years now, and he primarily resides in Chicagoland area. Hubble has not one, but two homes. He regularly travels with either of us between Chicago and Detroit.
In Harrison township he has been featured in the local magazine and being it’s a smaller town, he is locally known. Neighbors love him and he has other dog friends in the neighborhood. He loves to be outside in the cold weather. He likes to race cars, or chase them down. He weighs about 120 pounds. He is just over two now, and has recently really filled out to be a big guy.
His favorite treat is pupcups from Starbucks. We try to go once per weekend. He also really loves potatoes and pineapples. He hates bananas and is really on the fence about blueberries. His other favorite treat is a milkbone, and bonus if it has some peanut butter or honey on it.
Hubble DC is well loved and full of sass. He knows no personal space and is always at our feet. He surely thinks he is a 20 pound lap dog.
His best friend’s name is Digby. Digby is an older guy, about 20 pounds. He is blind and Hubble doesn’t have a clue. They are besties and I will include some pics. We regularly visit with Digby and even watch him sometimes when his pet parent is traveling.
Hubble DC is named after the telescope. My partner and I are nerds for sure. DC stands for direct current, as my partner is a nuclear and power systems engineer. HDC is also the light of our lives.
We trained him on the following commands: Sit, Stay, Speak, Talk shit (alternative to speak), What does the cow say?, Car wash (where he runs between your legs while standing), Say hi mom/dad, Bring me the [insert toy name here], Someone’s at the front door, Spin
My partner also asks him technical questions and hold a treat in either hand. Of course he always chooses the right answer. An example question is:
“What is the rest mass of a neutrino?”
And of course he knows the answer is “2.14×10^-37th kg”
By the way, his favorite toys are the giant ones. He has a giant flamingo and a giant goose. They are about six feet tall from end to end. He carries them around like regular size dogs carry their small toys… It’s quite comical.
HDC has the biggest personality. We call him the sneeze police. Anytime someone sneezes in his presence he is on high alert and barks. The att commercial on TV triggers his doorbell response. He loves roughhousing with his dad and going for walks.
