We rescued Hammy in September of 2015, just a few months after we got married. He joined our little fur family that included two 1 year old Bengal kittens. To say it was a bumpy start would be an understatement!
Hammy was a wild man, as puppies are! We were just learning, he was/is our first dog. He kept growing, and growing, and GROWING. One day, I came home from work to find that he broke out of his gate and was standing on the dining room table. His head all but touching the chandelier. That was the day I realized we were in over our heads and professional training was in order.
We worked together with the trainer for months. Hammy had been craving order and fell perfectly into place in our family. From there, we enjoyed long walks to the lake, trips to the dog beach, and weekends camping around Ohio.
We eventually moved to Pittsburgh and our family grew to include three kids and a third cat. Hammy now has a large yard that he fiercely protects. He has more neighbor friends than we do! Sometimes I feel like he’s the neighborhood celebrity – this beautiful, well behaved, snow-loving pup always up for playtime with even the smallest dogs brave enough to meet him for the first time.
Hammy is almost ten now. He is our whole world. We love this boy more than we could ever express. He wakes us up each morning with little nose pushes and big stretching groans to let us know he’s ready to put in a few miles outside. After his walk, he’s happy to nap away the day – unless of course there’s a delivery driver coming by or a butterfly passing. No one gets near this house without seeing him or hearing his booming Pyrenees bark!
Over the years, he taught us how to be responsible dog owners and he has kept us accountable each and every day. I’m so thankful this pup landed in our lives. I cannot imagine a better guy to have around and to learn from.
One last thing: we had Hammy DNA tested early on. He’s 50% Great Pyrenees, 37% German Shepherd, and 13% Samoyed. A perfect mix.
Thank you for trusting us to adopt Hammy. He is everything.
I have included a few pictures from over the years so you can put a face to his story. Thanks for reading!
