If there is one puppy that makes everyone in our adoption office stop what they’re doing, it’s a Cavapoo. Those big dark eyes, the soft wavy coat, and a tail that never seems to stop. We have had a lot of them come through Heaven to Earth Rescue lately, so I wanted to share what I’ve learned about them over the years.
What Is a Cavapoo?
A Cavapoo is a cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Miniature or Toy Poodle. They are not a breed recognized by the American Kennel Club, but they have become one of the most popular family dogs around. You may also hear them called Cavoodles.
They get the best of both sides. The Cavalier brings the sweet, people-loving personality. The Poodle brings brains and a coat that tends to shed less.
How Big Do They Get?
Most adult Cavapoos weigh 8 to 25 pounds and stand 9 to 14 inches tall, according to PetMD. That’s a wide range. The biggest factor is whether the Poodle parent was a Toy or a Miniature. When we know the parents, we’ll always give you our best guess. Even so, every litter has a surprise or two.
They typically live 12 to 15 years, so you’re signing up for a long friendship.
Personality: A Lap Dog With a Brain
Cavapoos are affectionate, gentle, and want to be wherever you are. They usually do well with children, other dogs, and even cats when introduced properly. Because they’re smart, they learn quickly. Housetraining and basic manners usually go well with short, positive sessions.
The flip side of all that love is that they don’t like being alone. A Cavapoo left by itself all day can develop separation anxiety, barking, or chewing. They’re best for a home where someone is around a good part of the day, or where the puppy gets practice being alone for short periods from the start.
They need moderate exercise. A couple of walks a day and some playtime are plenty. They’re happy as long as they’re with their people.
Grooming: Plan for It
That beautiful coat is one of the reasons people love them, and it takes work.
- Brush a few times a week, more if the coat is curlier. Mats form fast behind the ears, under the legs, and around the collar.
- Plan on a professional groom every 6 to 8 weeks.
- Check and clean ears regularly. Floppy, hairy ears trap moisture.
- Brush their teeth. Small dogs are prone to dental disease.
A quick note: “low shedding” is not the same as hypoallergenic. If someone in your home has allergies, spend time with the puppy before committing.
Health: What Every Cavapoo Owner Should Know
Keeping your Cavapoo at a healthy, lean weight is one of the best things you can do for their heart and joints. That’s why our puppies start on Hill’s Science Diet, and why we encourage adopters to use the feeding guide and measure meals instead of free-feeding.
Is a Cavapoo Right for You?
A Cavapoo could be a great fit if you:
- Want a small, affectionate companion who loves to cuddle
- Have someone home much of the day
- Are ready for regular brushing and grooming visits
- Will keep up with yearly vet checkups
